Psychotherapy

Services

At my office in Norwell, Massachusetts, I provide individual and couple's psychotherapy for a wide range of issues including:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • relationship difficulties
  • trauma
  • addictions
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • loss and grief
  • loneliness

My Approach

My approach to psychotherapy is a combination of the following:

  • the psychodynamic approach, which focuses on releasing blocked emotion and breaking destructive patterns
  • the existential approach, which focuses on people's personal responsibility for their lives and for bringing forth their unique potentials; and
  • the cognitive-behavioral approach, which focuses on here-and-now techniques for changing thoughts and behaviors

In addition, I am a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, and I am one of the few psychologists in Massachusetts who explicitly identify as a Christian psychologist. I believe that religion and spirituality can be very important in optimizing mental health, and I make it a priority to create an environment where clients can incorporate these aspects into treatment if they wish. Please note that I do not impose my religious beliefs on any client, and I welcome non-Christian clients who do or do not identify with other religious or spiritual traditions.

Sessions

I am available for sessions Mondays through Thursdays. All sessions are 50 minutes. I typically see clients on a regular basis, but I am flexible about this. I can meet with you weekly, every other week, once per month, or on another schedule if needed.

To schedule an appointment with me or to discuss whether my services are appropriate for you, you can reach me by phone at (617) 460-5718 or by email at contact@josephcoyle.com.

Please note that due to the relative lack of Christian psychologists in my geographic area, my practice tends to consistently have a wait of a number of months for new appointments. I will be happy to provide you with referrals to other providers if this is not feasible.

Insurance and Fees

I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, HMO Blue, Tufts, Tufts Public, Harvard Pilgrim, United, Optum, Medicare (Part B), Aetna, Unicare, Wellsense, Fallon, and Tricare. If you do not have any of these, other health insurance policies may give you out-of-network mental health benefits that will reimburse some portion of our sessions.

My fees are $220 for the initial session, and then $150 per session for individual psychotherapy and $170 per session for couple psychotherapy. Please call me at (617) 460-5718 to discuss any questions about insurance or fees.

Confidentiality

The privacy of my clients is one of my highest priorities, and the information that clients discuss with me in session is confidential. A client can give me written permission to disclose confidential information to a party whom she/he designates. However, according to Massachusetts state law, I am obligated to break confidentiality if I am ordered to do so by a judge or court, or if I believe that (1) the client is at risk of seriously injuring or killing her/himself, (2) the client is at risk of seriously injuring or killing someone else, or (3) the client has engaged in or is engaging in abuse or neglect of a child (a person under 18), an elder (a person over 60), or a disabled person.
